These 4 Signs Could Mean You Need Dentures

You might be someone who regularly brushes, flosses and uses mouthwash – a dentist’s perfect patient. On the other hand, you could be a person who regularly skips these activities. Unfortunately, tooth decay and tooth loss can affect everyone, despite a person’s best efforts to avoid it. As you get older, your gums naturally recede which can lead to loose teeth, as well as providing a chance for bacteria to set in and cause tooth decay.

Although age-related oral problems are difficult to prevent, there are various ways to treat issues such as tooth loss, with a main treatment option being dentures. But the question is, do you need dentures?

We have compiled a list of symptoms that could indicate the need for dentures or another similar treatment. There are other courses of action available including dental implants, but if you are set on a less invasive treatment option such as dentures, have a look at our symptom checklist below:

  1. Severe Toothache

If you have incredibly severe toothache, this could indicate that an infection has taken hold and already reached the nerves connected to your gums. A root canal could save the tooth, but if the infection is particularly serious then the tooth might have to be removed.

  1. Difficulty Chewing

Having difficulty or pain when chewing food is a sign that severe tooth infection has set in. Another symptom related to this is indigestion. Although not an obvious factor, indigestion is associated with swallowing large amounts of food due to the person’s inability to chew properly – a knock-on effect of tooth sensitivity.

  1. Red, Swollen and Bleeding Gums

A major sign of periodontitis (the late stage of ‘‘gum disease’’) is sensitive, swollen and bleeding gums when you brush your teeth. At this later stage of gum disease, bone loss can begin to occur which ultimately leads to loose teeth.

  1. Loose or Already-Missing Teeth

Are you currently experiencing loose teeth? Or had teeth that have fallen out already? If your answer is yes, then it is almost certainly time to visit a dentist to discuss your treatment options.
