The Effects of Sports Drinks on Our Oral Health

Energy drink cans.

A new study by the British Dental Journal has found that sports drinks are being regularly consumed by the general population, particularly amongst those age 16 and under.

Many sports drinks contain a mixture of both free sugars and acids – meaning these drinks have the ability to cause both dental caries and erosion.

It was found that a high proportion of children consumed sports drinks regularly, and this includes outside of sports.

It’s apparent that sports drinks are so popular with children due to their sweet taste, rather than for reasons associated with sport.

It’s important to be aware of the effects of sports drinks on your oral health – with a high acid content, consuming a high amount can lead to the erosion of tooth enamel.
